Dorothy Lewis Home, Cardiff

Canton Court, Canton, Cardiff, CF11 9BG.

Dorothy Lewis is a large, airy purpose-built Home for 40 people, over 70 years of age ( many of our residents are in their 80's and 90's). The Home is well established in a busy local community in Canton Court, Canton, just behind Boots the Chemist.

Close to the Home is a small community centre and a health centre. There are numerous local shops and public houses all within easy reach. Churches of various denominations are scattered through the locality but local ministers visit the Home and for those who wish to partake, Communion services are held regularly. Church services are conducted in the Home every Sunday afternoon, to which all are welcome.

Dorothy Lewis caters for both men and women in well decorated single rooms with washing facilities ensuite. Some rooms are large and will accommodate married couples at their request, but no other resident is required to share a room. Keys are available for all bedrooms.

Some residents are able to maintain and meet their own personal needs, whereas others are dependant upon the staff for assistance in washing, dressing, bathing etc. Dorothy Lewis does not provide nursing care, however access to the Community Nursing Service is available.

Frailty is no bar to life at Dorothy Lewis, for in common with our other Homes, it is well appointed with aids to daily living. There is a large lift to the second floor and spacious corridors, all with hand rails, which make moving around a safe and easy process, even with a zimmer frame. Specialised ambilifts, hoists and grabrails are available to aid those who require help with bathing, while other services, such as the chiropodists, dentist, optician etc, can be arranged from local practitioners who will visit the Home - a small charge being made for the chiropody service.

There are a number of lounges/TV rooms, some of which bustle, while others reflect peoples` need for quiet relaxation, maybe to read the paper or one of the large print books that can be delivered from the local library. It is a policy of the Home to help you keep as active as possible and hobbies, holidays, trips out, whether to the shops, cinema or to friends, are all encouraged, but the choice as to whether you take part remains yours. Among the various opportunities for activities currently available are art workshops; general activities group; monthly luncheon club; club night out and many other activities.

We also have independent advocates sponsored by Age Concern, who visit regularly in order to give residents confidential opportunities to discuss any issues they may wish assistance with, either on a one to one basis or in regular residents forums.

Although we ensure that your bedroom is nicely decorated prior to your arrival, we appreciate that you may have different taste. You will be pleased to know that when your room is next due for redecoration, you will be able to choose the decor yourself, this may also include carpets and curtains if appropriate.

You will notice that all the lounges are equipped with televisions, however many residents also have their own personal televisions in their bedrooms. If you find the reception from your aerial is not as good as you may have wished, you might want to consider asking an aerial specialist to install an external aerial for you.
