Plas y Garn, Pontypool

Plas-y-Garn is a two- storey building occupying an elevated position overlooking the town of Pontypool off Pen-y-Garn Hill, providing residential accommodation for 33 older persons in 5 self contained areas. There are bus stops near to Plas-y-Garn and a number of taxi firms serving the area. Plas-y-Garn is situated in its' own grounds which is ideal for short walks in safety.

Each unit consists of a lounge, dining/kitchenette area, bathroom with bath lift, two toilets and eight single bedrooms. All bedrooms have a fitted lockable wardrobe, chest of drawers, bed, bedside cabinet and sink unit as standard. Each room has a light fitting located over the bed, a vanity mirror and a ceiling light with dimmer. Central heating is available in each room. Power points and aerial sockets are located in each room.

Sky T.V. is also available in individual bedrooms subject to usual subscription fees. Residents are encouraged to bring in their own personal possessions.

Plas-y-Garn is staffed twenty-four hours a day by a well motivated, trained team, who confidently will assist to meet the care needs of all who stay here. Staff at Plas-y-Garn enable residents to maximise their abilities and reen_main in control of their lives, through having help to meet any of their needs beyond just basic care. A specially named member of staff will also assist in shopping with, or on behalf of a resident, liasing with family and friends and in some instances, with consent, act as advocate for a resident. A special relationship can develop between this staff member and the resident which reinforces that living at Plas-y-Garn can be a very positive choice.

Plas-y-Garn offers both respite and long term accommodation to adults who have been assessed by a Care Manager of Torfaen Social Services as needing residential care. One unit (8 beds) specialises in care for the elderly mentally infirm.

Meals provided at the Home are of a consistently high standard and a wide choice of food is available at each meal time, ranging from hot food to salads and snacks. Menus reflect seasonal trends and special diets. The wishes and requests of residents are catered for in a creative and appealing way, along with cultural and ethnic cuisine as needed.

A laundry service for personal clothing is available, if required. We can arrange visits from doctors, nurses, chiropody services, dentists, solicitors, hairdressers and beauticians. Church services of most denominations can be attended locally (transport arrangements can be made) also a visit by a faith representative to Plas-y-Garn can be arranged.

A wide range of leisure activities both within and outside of Plas-y-Garn takes place for residents. Each year trips are organised to places of interest as reflected by the wishes of the residents. Within Plas-y-Garn there is a regular programme of planned activities available to all residents, these include social evenings, quiz nights, sing alongs, barbecues, reminiscence sessions by trained staff and interest groups. Local artistes also visit.Torfaen 's mobile library service visits fortnightly with a good selection of books, videos and tapes. Sensory impairment needs are also catered for.
