St Isan Home, Llanishen, Cardiff

Newborough Avenue, Llanishen, Cardiff, CF14 5YN.

St Isan Home is situated in a quiet and pleasant avenue, close to the 'village' centre of Llanishen in North Cardiff. It is purpose built to accommodate men and women over the age of 65. Many of our residents are in their 80's and 90's.

All bedrooms at St Isan are individual and single with personal washing facilities within the room. Twelve of the 39 rooms are larger. We are able to accommodate married couples together when required.

St Isan has a en_main dining room and lounges - refurbished in 2000 - for 24 residents. There are also two small groups of 6 and 7 residents with their own lounge and dining room. For these groups, hot meals, prepared in the en_main kitchen are brought to the dining rooms in heated trolleys. Having smaller scale groupings of residents creates a more homely atmosphere. These two groups also have their own kitchen area with a sink, fridge, kettle and toaster etc. This enables snacks and drinks to be prepared by the residents themselves between meals if they are able to do this. In this way a greater degree of independence is retained by many residents.

The care staff at St Isan are all highly experienced and able to cope with the various care needs of the residents, assessed and planned for on an individual basis.

Some residents are able to en_maintain and meet most of their own personal needs, whereas others are dependant on the staff for assistance in washing, dressing, bathing etc. St Isan does not provide nursing care but has access to the Community Nursing Service.

The Home is equipped with a range of aids and adaptations including a lift, fixed bath and mobile hoists and rails throughout. There is also an emergency call system with switches in all the bedrooms and other rooms in the building to summon the help of care staff. Separate cleaning, cooking and laundry staff are employed for those specific purposes.

St Isan is inspected twice annually by the Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales. The reports on St Isan are publicly available and have always been favourable.

St Isan has good links with all the local GP practices so that wherever possible residents are able to retain their existing doctor. The home is regularly visited by community based district nurses. A visit ing dentist is available for minor treatment and an optician and a chiropodist will also see residents on a freelance basis, according to the particular needs of each resident.

A number of regular activities take place in the Home including weekly art sessions and craft sessions and regular 'Music and Movement' exercise classes. We have often engaged a volunteer over the last few years to help with activities such as quizzes, games and for additional help to enable residents to go out. There is a bar in the activities/communal room which is for the use of residents from the different units in the Home. A hairdresser calls weekly and has her own facilities here. The local Rotary Club organise a weekly bingo session at St Isan and the different religious denominations hold monthly services on site.
