Ty Dewi Sant, Penarth

Myrtle Close, Penarth, CF64 3HQ.

Ty Dewi Sant is a modern purpose-built, single storey, Care Home. It is home to 33 people, four of whom live independently in a comfortable bungalow attached to the en_main building by a covered walkway. Situated in its own large, lawned grounds and surrounded by a quiet, well established residential estate, the Home offers an enviable quality of life.

The home accepts men and women over the age of 65 years, many of Ty Dewi Sants current residents are in their 80's and some in their 90's.

Clergymen from local churches visit their parishioners regularly and there are monthly inter-denominational services held within the Home for those who wish to attend. All bedrooms in Ty Dewi Sant are individual and single with personal washing facilities ensuite. Some rooms are larger and will accommodate couples at their request, but no other resident will be required to share a room.

The Home itself is organised on a 'small group' basis, which does away with the 'institutional' noise and bustle associated with large groups of people. Individual choice and independence are highly prized objectives of the committed and experienced staff group at this Home. Many of the residents are able to meet and en_maintain their own personal needs whereas others are dependant on staff to assist them with washing, dressing, bathing etc.

Frailty is an accepted fact of life at Ty Dewi Sant but here frailty does not mean dependence. Modern equipment such as ambilifts and hoists in the bath areas, handrails in the corridors etc, are seen as positive aids to independence rather than signs of handicap. However, should anyone get into difficulty, then each room has an emergency call system with which help can be summoned quickly from the staff who will always be available to you.

Ty Dewi Sant has close contacts with the local community and local school children visit regularly. Activities organisers hold reminiscence and craft sessions and the local choirs and concert parties are a popular diversion to all. A very popular weekly event is a minibus trip to local places of interest.

Whilst Nursing Care is not provided arrangements for health provision are very thorough. Staff have worked hard to promote the good links with the local GP surgeries that the Home enjoys and the Home is regularly visited by nurses working in the community. A local dentist and optician visit the Home at regular intervals and a private chiropodist visits for a small fee (according to residents` personal needs).

Staff are in attendance 24 hours per day. They are trained to recognise and respond to the needs of elderly people in a caring and dignified manner that eases significantly the uncertainty and sometimes traumas of leaving one`s home and moving to a care home.

A keyworker system operates within the small group environment which foster close relationships between staff and residents and which staff believe offers a more personalised and individual service. Whilst an equal opportunity policy exists for the appointment of men and women, currently all care staff are female.
