Ty Dyfan, Barry
St Brides Way, Cadoxton, Barry, CF63 1DU.
Ty Dyfan is situated in the centre of a large well established residential area on the outskirts of Cadoxton, near the Colcot area of Barry. It is a purpose built Home for 32 people, fronted by beautiful flower borders and shrubs and surrounded with large grounds laid en_mainly in lawn with an 'orchard type' scattering of mature trees.
There is a bus stop on the quiet road some 25 yards from the front door, where connections can be caught for both Barry and Cardiff. A community centre is across that road and a local shop a little distance away.
Ty Dyfan is home for both men and women and provides well decorated single rooms with washing facilities ensuite. Some rooms are large and will accommodate married couples at their request, but under no circumstances will any other resident be required to share a room.
Spaciousness and safety are immediately felt qualities at Ty Dyfan with rooms, corridors and communal areas all large, airy and well appointed, with aids to help those residents who are more frail than others. There is a large lift to the second floor and rails in the corridors help give confidence and convenience to residents, especially those using zimmer frames. Should you get into difficulties, then each room, including bathrooms and toilets, is equipped with a call system and staff will respond immediately.
There are a number of lounges and TV rooms, some of which bustle, while others are more reflective and quiet, according to the wishes of the people who use them. The Home has always encouraged links with the local community, with local schools visiting to give concerts and do project work. We provide various social activities in the Home. Weekly crafts sessions, music and games, adult education and reminiscence classes. Fine art classes are currently very popular with residents. Also apart from regular visits to local theatres, residents enjoy day trips to local and surrounding beaches and sight seeing in the Vale of Glamorgan. Often we go out for meals to restaurants and pubs and take part in organised interHome skittle matches.
Staff are in attendance 24 hours a day. They are a very committed group of people who are trained to respond to the special needs of elderly people, in a caring and dignified manner. They stress that the Home is run for the benefit of the residents with no major hard and fast rules. The keyworker system is in operation in this Home. Such a system highlights and enhances the individual service offered to residents, with staff, for example, happily shopping for 'their' residents` personal needs and together putting a great deal of effort into making life at Ty Dyfan a pleasant and happy one.
The quality of the cooking provided is first class with advance choice menus provided and great efforts made to cater for residents` likes and dislikes. Special diets are catered for.
All clothes are washed and ironed in the fully equipped laundry by a full-time laundress. A chiropodist visits monthly at a small cost and a hairdresser also visits weekly at a fraction of the cost of a visit to a salon. We also have visits from Local Authority Chiropodists.
Residents at Ty Dyfan are encouraged to retain their GP, when entering the Home. Consequently, the Home is involved with almost all of the local practices, also the Community Nursing Services visit every day and the home has a good relationship with local dentists' practice. An optician also visits the home regularly.
