Woodcroft Care Home celebrates staff success

Two employees, Vicki and Irene, at our Woodcroft Care Home received highly commended certificates yesterday from the Wales Care Awards.

Irene Morgan, Activities Co-ordinator, has worked at Woodcroft for five years, where she first started as a carer. Irene was nominated by her manager, Elaine Mather, for the Promoting Fulfilled Lives category and was successfully shortlisted. Irene had to attend an interview, give a presentation about her work and also provide supporting testimonies from residents and their relatives.

After the surprise of receiving her certificate, Irene said: “I never expected to receive anything but I’m thrilled to bits to have been recognised for my work. I love what I do and making a difference to people’s lives. I like to make sure everyone gets involved in what’s going on.”

There are a number of popular activities which take place regularly at the home including bingo, cooking and a particular favourite with residents is Kaplunk, which Irene made herself.
Vicki Popple, Chef at Woodcroft and has been a member of the kitchen team since the home opened in 2012. Vicki has recently completed her level 3 in Hospitality and Catering and is currently working towards her level 4 qualification.

Also unknowingly nominated by Elaine, Vicki’s application was shortlisted for the Excellence in Catering category. Judges, Pat and Brian West, visited Woodcroft to observe Vicki’s work including meal preparation, food standards and the dining room service. The judges were particularly impressed by Vicki’s natural rapport with all 60 residents who she knows by name, their food preferences and personal dietary requirements.

Speaking to Vicki at the presentation, she said: “It’s very nice to be highly commended for my work that I love doing every day; it’s not something I’ve received previously. It’s also a great feeling to know that my manager felt that I was deserving of being put forward.”

Elaine Mather, Registered Manager at Woodcroft shares with us how proud she is of the whole team:

“They work together as one Hafod, going above and beyond in their role to make a difference to our residents. It’s really important to recognise the brilliant work the staff do each day and make them feel appreciated.  This was the first time Woodcroft has entered the awards so we’re really pleased to have been recognised and to know that we’re doing things well.

Although Vicki and Irene are the ones receiving certificates this time, it really is a team effort of everyone at Woodcroft that makes the home such a wonderful and friendly environment.”

Congratulations again to Vicki and Irene on their certificates!

Another great example of Making Lives Better
